Requirements To Become a Police Officer in Colorado

Colorado mandates that anyone desiring to become a peace officer in the state pass a certification examination administered by the Peace officer Standards and Training (POST) Board.

Before being allowed to take the written examinations, candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate, current first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificates or equivalents and they must have successfully completed, within two years prior to the test, an approved Colorado basic training course. Colorado has 24 of these academies scattered around the state.

Colorado Police Academy Requirements

The basic course training course requires, generally, about 37 hours of credits. This may vary some by academy. The curriculum consists of 19 credit hours of Basic Police Academy training, and classes in law, arrest control techniques, driving, firearms and physical conditioning.

Only after POST certification may a person become a police officer in Colorado, and even then there are additional state and local requirements to meet. By state law candidates must pass a physical exam, psychological evaluation and be cleared for hiring after a background check. In additional to the state standards that have to be met to achieve certification, individual agencies my have local hiring requirements, including minimum age, usually 21, passing a written employment test, an oral board review, physical agility test and polygraph test.

Agencies may also require a valid Colorado driver’s license, a clean driving record, addition college education and a further background check that includes a fingerprint check, and interviews with neighbors and employers.

Police Hiring Standards And Disqualifying Factors In CO

The state-required background check is pretty thorough and also requires fingerprinting and being cleared for certification as a peace officer through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation. By law, any person convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors is barred from becoming a police officer in Colorado. In addition, individuals with domestic violence convictions may not be eligible to be certified in the state.

Law Enforcement Career Information

The office of Colorado’s Attorney General maintains web site that provides detailed information about the certification process, complete with link to each of the approved basic training academies, and links to various jurisdictions that make it easy to research job openings and local hiring requirements. It can be accessed at www.coloradoattorneygeneral.gov.
