How To Become a Police Officer in ID

Idaho Police Academy Requirements

Idaho requires that all peace officers in the state complete a 10-week basic training academy course established by the state’s Peace Officer and Training Council (POST). The training is held at the State Police Academy in Meridian. When successfully completed, students will be eligible for basic certification as a patrol officer.

To attend the academy, students can already be employed by a police agency or they can be self-sponsored students and pay their own way. A good place to start getting information about requirements to attend the academy and minimum standards to become a police officer in Idaho is the POST website at www.post.idaho.gov.

Peace Officer Hiring Standards

The above website will provide potential peace officers information about requirements to become a police officer, such as the minimum age, 21. Candidates also have to be U.S. citizens, high school graduates or have earned a GED equivalent, and have at least two or more years of work experience of attendance at an institution of higher learning after high school graduation. A valid driver’s license is mandatory.

Disqualification Factors

All candidates will undergo fingerprinting and a background check and clearance by the Idaho State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A conviction on any local, state, or federal crime may disqualify a candidate as will violations concerning illegal drug use.

In fact, Idaho POST is very adamant about the criminal conviction and drug-use aspects of the application process and states that candidates should not apply if they:

  • Have any felony conviction;
  • Have any misdemeanor conviction within five years of the application date;
  • Have ever been decertified as a peace officer in any state or jurisdiction;
  • Have been given any of the following Military Discharges: Bad Conduct Discharge (BCD), Dishonorable Discharge (DD), or Administrative Discharge of than Honorable (OTH);
  • Do not meet the requirements of the Idaho State Police drug use policy which includes but is not limited to use or possession of LSD, PCP, opiates such as heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, or designer drugs such as ecstasy;
  • Have ever been fired from a job, with just cause, for any of the following reasons:
  • Theft of company property;
  • Misuse of company or department finances;
  • Falsification of time reporting or other official documents;
  • Sick leave abuse (use of sick time in violation of applicable laws, rules and procedures);
  • Drug or alcohol use that negatively affected job performance; or
  • Committing any form of illegal harassment.
