The path to becoming a police officer in Montana will typically begin by obtaining a job with a police agency. The state has developed some minimum qualifications that applicants will have to meet, but some agencies may have additional requirements.

The state requirements were established by the Montana Public Safety Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) http://doj.mt.gov/post/.

Requirements & Qualifications

Entry-level requirements set by POST include U.S. citizenship and a minimum age of at least 18. Applicants must be a high school graduate or have a GED equivalent, and they must be of good moral character as determined through a background investigation.

All candidates will be fingerprinted as part of the background investigation, which will look into any possible criminal record. A medical examination by a licensed physician is required. Finally, if POST should develop any additional standards prior to the time an application is submitted, candidates will have to meet these, also.

Police Academy Requirements & Training Standards

Once employed by a police agency, recruits have one year from the date of hire to attend the basic training course at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy http://doj.mt.gov/mlea/, although an extension of not more than 180 days may be granted. If a recruit does not enroll within this time frame, his/her job, authority and arrest powers are terminated.

The Academy is the primary law enforcement and public safety educational and training institution in the state. The 12-week Law Enforcement Officer Basic Course is offered three times a year. Topics covered include Law, Human Behavior, Police Function, Patrol Operations, Investigation, Traffic Enforcement and Police Proficiencies.

Individuals who have not been hired by a police agency before attending the Academy may attend on their own, paying the tuition themselves. This program is called the Law Enforcement Officer Pre-Service Program, is of the same 12-week duration and follows the same curriculum. It has a 95% success rate in placing students in law enforcement jobs after graduation. The cost of the Pre-Service Program is $4,100.

Physical Fitness Test Standards

All prospective students to the academy must also pass the Montana Physical Abilities Test. www.bsb.mt.gov/departments/documents/MPATsummary.pdf. This test is a hybrid physical fitness test that will evaluate a candidate’s ability to meet the physical requirements to satisfactorily perform police functions on the job.

Once the officer has completed the basic training course at the academy, and has completed a full-year of employment with the same police agency, the officer can receive POST certification as a peace officer.

Police Officer Salary – Average Cop Pay in Montana

According to the Bureau Of Labor Statistics (2010), a police officer in the state of Montana makes between $43,400 – $48,120 per year. However the data collected by BLS aren’t very accurate because it does not record overtime pay or off duty work. These two factors, if included in the data, would increase the average salary of a police officer in MT.
