To become a peace officer in Nebraska, candidates must complete a 14-week course given by the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island.

Candidates may have already been employed by a police agency before attending the Center, or they may enroll without having been hired and complete a diploma program.

After completing the diploma program graduates have two years to be hired by a law enforcement agency in order to receive certification from the state as a peace officer.

Requirements & Qualifications

Admission standards to the Center are established by the Nebraska Crime Commission on Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Rules. You can view a complete list of qualifications and admission procedures here.

Here is a summary of these requirements. The minimum age is 21 before completing the program. U.S. citizenship is necessary, as is a high school diploma or GED. The candidate must have a valid Nebraska driver’s license and be able to demonstrate an ability to read, write and understand the English language at the 11th grade level.

A background investigation will be conducted to verify that the person is of good character and to uncover any criminal record. Persons convicted of or pardoned of a crime punishable by more than a year’s term in a penitentiary cannot be admitted into the Center.

Nor can someone convicted of driving while intoxicated or under the influence within two years of admission. Anyone receiving a punitive discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces is barred from the Training Center as is anyone convicted of any crime involving the threat or use of physical violence.

Disqualifying Factors

Other disqualifying factors are: conviction of any crime of physical violence or sexual abuse against a child; conviction of any domestic violence crime that under federal law bars the individual from possessing a firearm. Anyone subject to an order or protection preventing them from possessing a firearm under federal law cannot be admitted.

There are number of other disqualifying factors, including physical, mental or emotional incapacity, a pattern of substance abuse and frequent convictions for traffic violations.

Medical Evaluation

All applicants must be examined by a doctor within one year of admission. The physician must certify the applicant as meeting physical requirements for admission. Applicants can view the medical requirements at this web site: http://www.nletc.state.ne.us/pdfs/medical.pdf.

Police Training Standards

Once accepted for admission the candidate will undergo rigorous training for the 14 weeks. The training is based on a law enforcement job task analysis the state has undertaken. The specifics of that task analysis can be reviewed here: http://www.nletc.state.ne.us/pdfs/JobDesc.pdf.

Reviewing the task analysis will provide candidates with a good understanding prior to entering the Training Center on what they will face as part of the challenging combination of classroom and hands-on skills training. After graduating the recruit police officer may find that the agency hiring him/her may require additional field training for new hires.

Police Officer Salary – Average Cop Pay in Nebraska

According to the Bureau Of Labor Statistics (2010), a police officer in the state of Nebraska makes between $43,400 – $48,120 per year. However the data collected by BLS aren’t very accurate because it does not record overtime pay or off duty work. These two factors, if included in the data, would increase the average salary of a police officer in NE.
