If you are looking to become a police officer, but you don’t want to take the police civil service exam, then this article is for you. In this article I’m going to discuss two ways this can can be done. I want to warn you though; there is no guarantee that you will get the position and you’ll still have to sit through the oral board interview .

Here’s what I’ve found out:

If you want to bypass the police officer exam altogether, your options are pretty limited but not impossible.  The departments who don’t require an applicant to take the civil service entrance exam are very low risk, small town agencies.

Those towns usually have around 1-2 officers working per shift and normally you are on call 24/7. Don’t worry  though. You won’t get called out  since nothing really happens.  Another thing about small departments like that are they don’t pay as well as bigger agencies. You will be more connected to the community since you’ll know everybody there, but the pay is not nearly as high as that of a big town officers.

I’m not trying to deter you from applying because these towns need police officer too, but I simply want to bring awareness to the negative side of the matter. Some of the pros are it’s a great stepping stone for bigger opportunities later on. Now if you are already certified, you can work for a private university that doesn’t require an entrance exam; they normally pay a lot more. Sometimes private instiutions pay more than large agencies simply because they are a private institution not funded by tax payers.

I know I mentioned you must be certified, but that’s not always the case. Those are the only two options I know of that will allow you to skip the civil service exam and still become a police officer. Let me make sure you understand you’re not out of the woods yet because you’ll still have to do well on your Oral Board interview.  The oral exam is designed to measure your communication, judgement, and reasoning skills.

How to Become College University Police Officer

If you want to know how to become a University Patrol officer,  you have come to the right place.  First and foremost, I must tell you ththe competition is tough. This is because college cops get paid very well and more especially those that work for private institutions.

The income potential is limitless if you work for a big university. It is not far fetched to see an entry level patrolmen to be nearing 80k at the end of the year. The big advantage when working for a college campus is you’ll avoid the political mind games at local agencies, plus you’ll get paid a lot more.

The problem is you’ll face a lot of competition for just a hand full of openings. It’s not uncommon to see hundreds or even thousands of applicants for a few openings. For big universities it’s even more. One great thing about being an on-campus cop is you’ll have the same arrest powers as regular cops. You’ll get the same training and your certification is good at any department.

That’s good news if you decide to transfer to another department for more action. Now here’s the bad news; you’ll have to put up with stubborn students who will tell you  in a heart beat that they are paying your salary.  You will be called everything in the book from rent a cop, mall cop, and more.

If you don’t mind putting up with that, then let’s proceed. The hiring process is as followed:

Police Officer Selection Process – Advice on How to Survive

The police selection process can be divided into the following stages:

Application form

The selection process begins with the applicationform that asks details of the candidate. The candidates should complete the application form completely without leaving any question unanswered. Resumes, unless asked for, are generally not accepted and completing all the information in the form is very important as failing to do so may result in rejection of our application.

Candidates should disclose anything relevant in reference  to their past and marital status and dependents. If you have queries about the application form,  you should contact the recruiting department. Additional information about physical characteristics, like contact lens, should be mentioned in the form. The application form can be downloaded from the agency’s official website and you can send it back either through mail or completing an online application form and submitting it electronically.

Police Written Exam

Moreover, the police civil service exam, usually the next phase, consists of eight major categories:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Basic Mathematics
  • Vocabulary
  • Report Writing
  • Directional Orientation
  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Communication

Sometimes, sample test questions are available on the official police website. If not, you can usually get a police exam study guide either online or via your local bookstore. Candidates can also get a better idea of the examination through access courses and additional help. An access course will help the candidates to learn about the career in police, developing core skills, developing skills in research, writing, numeracy, and analytical judgments.

Fitness assessment

Once you pass the entrance examination you should try following a police specific workout program that will help develop the three main fitness categories in which you’ll be evaluated. The fitness assessment will be strictly based on measuring your strength & endurance, aerobic capacity, and anaerobic power. The body mass index of the candidates may also be recorded.

Oral Board Interview

The fitness test is followed up by  the police oral board interview and is typically administered by a panel of current or retired police officers. If you pass the oral interview, you can proceed to the psych test. Preparation is very important to pass the interview as the interview itself will cover a wide range of subjects. The attitude, commitment, and other skills of the candidate are also tested by the panel.  During the interview, you will be questioned about your views on various issues which will test your abilities to remain impartial as an officer. 4 Steps to Become a Police Detective – Investigate Crime as a Detective

If you want to become a police detective that investigates crime, then there are some steps you’ll need to complete first. One mandatory step that cannot be overlooked is you must have at least one year of police officer experience.

I know that may sound elementary to some, but I don’t know how many times I’ve heard people say they just want to be a detective straight out of the academy. Ycan’t simply walk in from the policeacademy and be assigned to the detective division. It simply doesn’t work that way.

After riding with an FTO for several weeks, you’ll be cut loose on your own. In larger departments you may have a partner, but usually you will be riding by yourself.

Here are some tips to get a solid footing in your new career.

1. Most situations will not be how they were described in the academy. Don’t lose sight of what is happening around you.

2. Don’t forget your job is to help people. Don’t be a jerk. Being cautious is good, but don’t be out to bust people just to bust people.

3. Listen to and respect officers who have been on the street longer than you have. They have the street smarts you need to learn.

4. Don’t neglect your family. Healthy family relationships are important to relieving job stress.

5. Don’t move too quickly. Sometimes rushing things at an incident can escalate a situation unnecessarily.

6. Don’t take things personally. You will be insulted regularly. Don’t let it get under your skin or you may end up doing something that leads to complaints or administrative action against you.

7. Slow down and wear your seatbelt. The number one cause of death for LEOs is car accidents. Take the extra 30 seconds or minute to get to your call. Don’t turn a simple call into a life threatening situation for you, fellow officers, or citizens.

8.Think before you speak. Whether you are speaking to a citizen, a suspect, a fellow officer, or a supervisor. Don’t say something you may regret down the road. You never know who you may offend.

9. Always know where you are. Learn your city’s streets and the directions they run in as if it were second nature. Always know where you are and the direction you are going so when you need backup you can tell dispatchers where you are.

10. Don’t get in such a hurry you forget to put your car in park.

Become a Cop – 5 Things That Will Make You More Hireable

There are several different things you can do to make yourself more attractive to police departments across the nation. With the economy taking a nose dive, you need a competitive edge.  Here are five things that will make you stand out:

#1 – Learn a second language, especially Spanish

As much as I think everyone who lives in the United State should speak English, the truth is some don’t and departments across the country are looking for people who can connect with them better.

#2 – Become certified in first-aid and CPR

Become first-aid and CPR certified.  You can do this at any local community centers and it looks good on your application.

3# – Put yourself through the academy

This depends on the state you are in. For example, in some states the academy is free, but you must be hired and sent by an agency. In some states you can sponsor yourself in the academy. This means you’ll have to pay your own way and it is expensive.   In these  economic times, a lot of departments are going to hire certified officers to save time and money. If this is a possibility for you and you can afford it, then I would definitely look into it.

#4- Obtain a concealed weapon permit

Get a permit to carry a concealed weapon.  It shows you have passed a background check and you know how to handle a firearm.  It also helps show you are responsible.

#5- Expunge your record

If applicable, if you have a minor criminal charge from years ago, get it expunged.  Go to the origin town/county and talk to them.

How to Get a Job with the San Francisco Police Department

If you want to work for the San Francisco police department there are several unique branches within the department that may interest you. But for those who just want to be a patrol person, you must be at least 21 years old, be a United States citizen, possess a valid California driver’s license, and never have been convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanor offenses like domestic battery.

As I mentioned earlier, there are other components inside the department that can peak your interest if you’re ultimately eliminated during the hiring process. One component is to become a civilian employee in the Behavioral Science Unit or other non-police functions like a counselor and/or a Chaplin.  All employment requires the minimum of a high school diploma or a GED.

Patrol officers in San Francisco start off between $75,000 and $101,000 per year, far better than any other city in the country. Compared to other cities that start you off at $40,000, San Francisco is really competitive when it comes to police officer compensation.

Police officers on the force are also able to retire as young as  50 years old and can draw a maximum 90% benefit based on their cumulative years of service. Candidates must keep an eye on future testing as the San Francisco police department conduct their test twice per quarter. Currently as of today’s date, the department is accepting applications online and has an examination date set. You can call the recruiting department to get the test site address and exact date of the exam.

Getting a hold of the recruiting department is critical as you must reserve a space to even take the pre-employment written test. The written exam is usually given eight times per year, twice per quarter about 2 months apart. The exam consists of the physical assessment  and written. Applicants who pass the written and agility test will move on to the background check and later the oral board interview.

How to become a police officer – 6 steps you must do

Some people decided that they wanted to get into law enforcement early on in life and some people like me come to the realization that police work was for them later on in life. Either way,  there are a number of steps you have to go through in order to become a cop.

I’ve compiled a list of steps that are mandatory if you want to become a police officer. It doesn’t matter where you live, these steps are required in order to get the job.

The steps below are not necessarily in order as different agencies have different way of doing things, but they are dead on as far as what you need to do to get hired.

Step#1 – Education:

If you don’t have a high school diploma, GED, or at least 21 years of age, you might as well forget about it. Some departments (very few for now) require you have at least 60 college credits in order to even apply. The large majority of departments across the country only require a high diploma for now.

Step#2 – Application process:

The application for employment has to be competed correctly in order to move ahead in the hiring process. If you don’t get a call back or an invitation to take the physical assessment test, nine times out of ten it’s because you’ve completed the application incorrectly. The best way to make sure that you’ve competed the application correctly is to have someone else look it over before you submit it. Things like poor grammar and misspellings are really bad. That’s why it is best to let someone proof read it beforehand.

Step# 3- Physical Assessment Test:

This is where things  get to be a little exciting. You are invited to the agility test and this is your very first time to impress. The worst thing you can do is show up to the test site overweight and/or out of shape. Its really not that hard to get into shape for the police fitness exam, just a little bit of discipline and motivation will do you wonders.

Normally if you workout three times a week, 45 minutes or less, and follow a police specific workout program that includes a combination of resistance training and cardio, you’ll do fine.

Step#4- Polygraph Test

This is where the agency will examine if you are a person of integrity or not. The key here is to be 100% honest. Don’t lie or make up stuff; just stick to the truth and you’ll be fine.

This test is not designed to penalize candidates who have made bad decisions early on in their life. Not at all. The only way you can fail the polygraph examination is by being untruthful. I don’t care how embarrassed you are about a particular incident just tell the truth, and you’ll be okay. The only people who fail this section of the hiring process is the ones who lie.

Step#5- Police written exam and oral board interview

You’ve completed the application correctly, and you were invited to the fitness test, but now it’s time to tackle the police officer written exam, and the oral board interview. The goal here is to get a top score on both individual exams. Just getting a passing score is not good enough anymore in the police hiring process. You have to out perform the competition and the police oral board interview is where you’ll have the first opportunity to do just that.

If you are lucky enough, you can get a list of the most commonly asked police interview questions from your recruiter in order to prepare. In the event that you can’t get one, I suggest digging for one online until you can find a reputable site that has a good police interview prep guide available.

Step#6 – Psychological Exam

Once you pass all those required steps, all that’s left is the psychological test. The psychological exam is not hard at all. It is designed to filter out the individuals who are mentally unstable. The last thing a department wants to do is hire someone who will shoot someone in the back without due cause.

There you have it, the six steps, if completed without a hitch, will get you on the eligibility list for hire.
