sheriff072005 150x150 Sheriff county oral board interview questionsTo become a Sheriff’s deputy there are a series of exams you must take and pass. There’s the agility test and the sheriff entrance exam but none are more important than the oral board interview. The oral board interview is your last and final chance to sell yourself to the department. If you don’t impress the raters on the board, you’ll simply get eliminated.

The best way to prepare yourself for this nerve-racking oral interview is to gather as much information about the  interview as possible. For one, learn about the questions the panel will ask you and then practice answering them.

I want to help as many people as possible get into law enforcement. So I’ve compiled a list of the most commonly asked Sheriff interview questions that you should prepare for below.

Important Note: You’ll also be asked ethics based questions as well. You’ll be expected to articulate to the board what “integrity” means to you.

Here are a few sample questions you’ll encounter during the interview:

  • Why do you want to become a County Sheriff Deputy ?
  • How have you prepared yourself for this position?
  • Tell us about your background, experience and training as it relates this position?
  • Why are you interested in a  career in law enforcement?
  • What are your qualifications?
  • Name some of your greatest strengths?
  • What do you consider to be your greatest weakness?
  • How would you rate your ability to get along with others? What is the basis for this rating?
  • How effective are you in working in a team environment and why?
  • What would others say about your work ethic?
  • How has your education and training prepared you for a career in law enforcement?
  • What accomplishment has given you the most satisfaction and why?
  • How would you rate your ability to work under pressure? What is the basis for this rating?

Important Note: You can also expect several scenario type questions designed to measure your reactions to certain situations.

The key to being successful with these questions is to be yourself. Answer the questions with confidence. Don’t hesistate or take a long period of time before answering the question. Always look the panel in the eye when answering the questions.
