I get emails from people all over the country asking me what’s it like being a police officer. Some of those folks are sincere individuals who once dreamed of being a police officer, but because of family disapproval and outlandish tales about the lifestyle of a police officer, they chose another career path.
One myth that I’ve heard is all cops are crooks and womanizers. I want to dispel that myth right now because that is a BIG FAT LIE.
The truth is many police officers are respectable, family oriented individuals who deeply love their kids and wife. Another myth that I’ve heard over the years is that police officers are poorly paid. Well that may have been the case 30 years ago, but the salary of a police officer has steadily increased over the past decade or so.
So the big question now is why should you become a police officer. There are several reasons why I consider police work to be the best profession in the world. To explain why, I’ve listed two reasons why most people become cops:
There are police officers who join a local police department because they seek a higher level of adventure. It is difficult for some people to understand the logic behind this particular decision. There are not many people who would find excitement in the kind of danger that police officers face on a daily basis. However, there are some police officers who get an adrenaline rush from this particular job.
Many men and women become police officers to continue a special tradition in their family. They may be more inclined to join law enforcement because their mother or father was a police officer. Siblings continue the tradition as well by joining the police force. It is not unheard of to find a large amount of detectives and police officers who are related to each other. Some police officers encourage their children to be a part of law enforcement.
